While installing fiber optic equipment it is common to experience accidental power loss caused by damage to the internal fibers. In order to prevent this issue, OptoSpan has introduced Bend-Insensitive fiber optic cable assemblies which allows implementation of twisting, bending, and other rugged networking solutions without possible fiber breakage.
Due to the physical nature of fiber optics, the light signal transported within a cable assembly is constantly internally refracted between the fiber cladding and the underlying core due to the difference in the refraction index. When the fiber cable assembly experiences bends, twists, or extensive physical forces, the normally refracted light is able escape from the fiber and leak into the protective PVC jacketing, which causes light leakage, and leads to signal loss.
These Bend-Insensitive fiber cables introduce a higher refraction index into the cladding layer of the optical fiber, increasing the refraction difference between the cladding and core. The increased difference allows for light to be completely refracted even when under bends and twists which may otherwise render the fiber optic cable assembly useless.
